Hohenheim !

Buona sera carissimi followers!

come state? spero vada tutto alla grande!

«Ciao, mi chiamo Osca, e sono l’ispirazione».

Sono incredulo. Fatico a parlare.

Ascolto in silenzio.

Hohenheim

Damn. Damn. Damn. I’m sitting here at the desk, waiting for inspiration to get me. But tonight it seems like inspiration won’t be kissing me, as it usually did. May it be because I drank too much gin from that chipped glass which so angrily I hold in my left hand when this kind of nights happen? I’ve always thought inspiration is like a goddess, or may it be a nymph: wrapped up in a looking-through green dress, with ivory skin, long black hair the wind has so much fun messing up, and funny pointy ears.
Window’s open. It’s cold. But this autumn night is enchanting - it may be because tomorrow is the first day of winter, and I foolishly smile thinking some withered yet venous leaves still eagerly hang from the trees, as if their spirit wants them to resist life cycle. Sometimes I ask myself if I’d ever be able to similarly hold on, spending all the energies I have on enjoying these little things so much I love.
One more. One more drink. Just one more and then I’ll bare myself. I’ll take off my clothes with delicate fierceness and I’ll get myself to sleep. Inspiration didn’t come to me.

I can’t sleep. Don’t know what time is it, clock’s broken. But it’s still dark outside. Neon lights are coming in through the curtains, hitting my hand busy understanding the geometry of my body. It’s crazy, but I’m ashamed of myself when I try to connect the freckles on my skin mapping roads I could’ve followed but that instead I ignored. I think of all the books I promised myself and the typographers I would’ve written: books I then withdrew because those works were missing the ending. But how can you finish something that has started but has never existed? I was scared characters could’ve been limited in choosing their own patch because of me. And the more I tried to explain it to writers like me, the more I was ostracized, because I wasn’t understood. Or maybe I didn’t want, all in all, to be understood. Or maybe, more easily, I didn’t know how to explain myself.
Only once I was able to meet someone with my exactly same thinking. It was an unknown Dutch painter, who depicted just half the canvas he worked on; when I questioned him about the reason behind that action, he replied - «because of its nature, it’s borders and its standard shape, a canvas is limited. I want to save what I paint, giving it the chance to be its own painter».
Among his works, I got my eyes on one. Named Hohenheim, from the Stuttgart quarter where the painter found the subject for his work, he portrayed a wonderful woman whom, as I saw her painted, remembered my idea of inspiration. I was enraptured; in that instant my mind started asking whether that man, that certain Dutch painter, so lonely, so broke, could’ve painted the real Inspiration, getting any pleasure in doing so.

But that wasn’t the only thing that struck me - even though the Dutch painted only half the canvas, Hohenheim was different. The painter portrayed, on the right of the canvas, half the face of the woman from a three-quarter perspective. The color was dark, thick, grainy, with a vivid purple tone. What should - it really should! - dismay the observer lays in the other half of the painting: long horizontal lines of pure vivid color heavily dragged themselves from the woman’s face to the extreme left border of such a creative space. The darkness that woman showed was counterbalanced by those unfathomable colors. «I saw, I saw in that woman, a light, a blinding shine blurred by a sad looking, so full of memoirs». The Dutch seemed overwhelmed by an unusual nervousness, but he continued «I had to paint it, I couldn’t restrain myself from doing so: in that woman, I guess for the first time, in that woman I saw a whole story. When I showed her the painting, she withheld, cried, and got gone».

The light of dawn comes into the room. It’s the first time I get this annihilated by a drink – my body seems insensitive to any external abuse, whilst my mind looks like a huge ballroom with no dancers. I’m so tired, yet I can’t let Sleep be my lustful lover this night. Not only Inspiration, but also Sleep has decided to shun me.

It’s been a couple moments small lights have been floating along the room, giving me a magic yet scary impression. I’m enticed, I want to gaze them but I’m afraid of even the most bashful reactions. Suddenly, these small flashing lights are getting closer and closer above the work I was trying to write some hours ago. A red one, a purple one, a green one. Red, purple, green. Red, purple, green. Red. Purple. Green.
Boom. They mingled together and a droll character appeared, not taller than my hand; it invites me to get closer. It seems mellow and ain’t dreadful, so I decide to get closer. It warmly glows, as if it wants to put everyone who’s looking it at ease. I slightly move the chair and try to give an order to my scripts. It looks at me.

«Osca» it says in the silence of the room.

I guess I’m giving here a doubtful look, since she’s trying to explain herself. «Hi, my name’s Osca, and I’m the Inspiration».

I’m speechless. I stutter. How can such a small, red-cheeked, roly-poly creature be the one who inspired ungraspable texts and mesmerizing works of art, works Beauty itself could’ve never get any closer to?

«Don’t let my persona deceive you: more than the others you know talent doesn’t show itself for what the other think it is, but for what it actually is».

How to strike back, when that’s the main reason I got ignored for so long by typographers?

«I heard your prayer, and I showed myself to you» she says, happily jumping here and there. «I’m sorry I cannot lead your hand through the writing of your scripts, because that is not what inspiration do».

I hear in silence. «Being inspired transcends time and space. It’s no different from love - so much gives, so much takes away. It’d be amazing to show and explain its inner workings, but being a mystery is what leads us all to seek its quintessence and appreciate its humblest presence». I nod.

I’ve always thought inspiration came from the world around us, when it’s actually within us. Inspiration is our inner sky: whatever the ambience is, the marvel leaves us nothing but speechless and motionless.

«I have to go now, but remember: it is not what you create that makes you you, but what you are and what you do define what you shape. Farewell». Inspiration’s gone, leaving me overwhelmed by those colorful streams the Dutch, in our conversation, called inspiration.

Dew tries to slip between the leaves which are still holding back from the coming in of winter.
I put my scripts back in order again. I take a pen. I write what you’re now reading.
